We recently finished this project for wallpaper removal in Overland Park. It was a large task to remove wallpaper in seven rooms in this Overland Park home many of the rooms had high ceilings and complicated structure. We were tasked with removing the wallpaper at a professional grade level to prepare it for painting. Our team went in and begin the process of reviewing the walls testing out the surfaces to see what type of equipment and chemicals would be needed to remove the wallpaper. Most of the rooms were simple enough to use warm water and scraping devices.

The main bathroom was the most complicated room to remove wallpaper from it, required us to use a steamer to loosen the glue from the wallpaper at heights of 20 feet in the air, they were also recessed areas in which it was difficult to get scraping tools into, and we had to find ways to remove the tiny pieces of wallpaper throughout. In addition to remove itself we prepared the walls for painting by adding layers of drywall mud and finishing the drywall mud into the walls. We also repaired many dents and scrapes in the walls so that there was a smooth surface ready for painting .

The Art and Struggle of Wallpaper Removal: Common Difficulties and How to Overcome Them

Wallpaper can breathe life into a room, infusing it with color, pattern, and texture. However, there comes a time when the once-adored design becomes dated or you simply crave a change in scenery. In these instances, wallpaper removal is the necessary first step to transforming your space. Despite seeming straightforward, the process often proves more challenging than anticipated. Let’s delve into some common difficulties faced during wallpaper removal and how you can best navigate them.

Old, Stubborn Wallpaper

Wallpapers installed years, or even decades ago, can be incredibly stubborn to remove. Older adhesive technologies make the paper adhere to the wall more tightly, making it difficult to scrape off without damaging the underlying surface. One way to tackle this problem is by perforating the wallpaper with a scoring tool, then applying a wallpaper remover solution or a mixture of vinegar and water. This helps to break down the adhesive, making it easier to strip away.

Drywall Damage

One of the most common issues is damaging the drywall beneath the wallpaper during removal. This happens particularly when the wallpaper was applied directly onto the drywall without a proper primer. If you notice any drywall damage, halt the process and carefully remove surrounding areas. Afterwards, you’ll need to patch and sand the damaged sections before proceeding with your renovation project.
